Subject pronouns in Spanish (Personal pronouns / Pronombres personales)

In Spanish we have something called “Pronombres Personales” which are subject pronouns in English language.  In Spanish we have seven subject pronouns, plus their feminine version in some pronouns:

Subject pronounsMasculine / NormalFemenine
IYo
You (singular) / Usted (formal)
Vos (Argentina & Uruguay)
He / SheÉlElla
WeNosotrosNosotras
You (plural)Ustedes
Vosotros (Spain)
TheyEllosEllas

We use “” with people we know, friends, family, acquaintances, etc.

We use “Usted” if we want to sound formal, for example: with people we do not know, older people, professionals, doctors, etc. If we want to sound formal, with people we do not know, older people, professionals, doctors, etc. “Usted” is the best option. Although, remember that “Usted” is used just in these specific situations.

You (singular)Tú / Usted (formal)

Another important point is that you have to deem whether “Usted” is formal or not in the country that you are. Some countries in Latin America use “Usted” as casual, and “” as formal.

Tú eres un estudiante de español.
You are a student of Spanish.

¿Usted es mi doctor?
Are you mi doctor? (you formal)
