If you’re traveling to Argentina—or moving here—you’ll notice quick that Argentinian Spanish isn’t “textbook.” We use voseo (vos instead of tú), a different LL/Y sound, and lots of everyday slang. The good news: with a few high-impact phrases you can order, pay, get around, and ask for help with confidence.
This post gives you the essential phrases for cafés, transport and money—plus a free Survival Kit you can download at the end.
Why Argentinian Spanish feels different
Pronunciation (LL/Y): In Buenos Aires and much of Argentina, ll and y often sound like English “sh/zh”.
- yo → “sho” (I)
- llave → “sha-ve” (key)
Voseo: We say vos (you), with its own verb forms:
- vos tenés / querés / podés → you have / want / can
- imperatives: decime / pasame / mostrame → tell me / pass me / show me
A bit of slang (use with care):
- che (hey), posta (for real), bondi (bus)
Ordering & paying (super short and useful)
- Hola, ¿cómo andás? — Hi, how are you?
- ¿Me traés la carta, porfa? — Could you bring me the menu, please?
- La cuenta, ¿me la traés? — Can I get the bill, please?
- ¿Aceptás tarjeta / QR / efectivo? — Do you take card / QR / cash?
- ¿Me hacés precio si llevo dos? — Can you give me a better price if I take two?
- ¿Tenés cambio de ___? — Do you have change for ___?
Money words you’ll hear:
- plata / guita (money), mango (peso), luca (one thousand), palo (one million)
Moving around (bus/bondi, subte, taxi)
- ¿Este va para ____? — Does this one go to ____?
- ¿Me deja cerca de ____? — Does it drop me near ____?
- ¿Dónde está la parada? — Where’s the bus stop?
- ¿Hago combinación en ____? — Do I transfer at ____?
- Me bajo en la próxima. — I’m getting off at the next stop.
- ¿Me abrís la de atrás? — Can you open the back door? (bus)
Voseo mini-cheat
- vos hablás / comés / vivís → you speak / eat / live
- vos sos (you are), vos tenés (you have), vos querés (you want), vos podés (you can)
Say them out loud with the final stress: hablÁS, comÉS, vivÍS.

Try putting two pieces together in the same interaction:
“Hola, ¿cómo andás? ¿Aceptás tarjeta? La cuenta, porfa.”
“Hi, how are you? Do you take card? The bill, please.”
“¿Este va para Palermo? ¿Me avisás cuando lleguemos a Plaza Italia?”
“Does this go to Palermo? Can you let me know when we reach Plaza Italia?”
Small wins like these build real confidence fast.
